Tips for Writing a ‘Title Tag’ for your Webpage

Writing a title tag for a webpage is much of an art and much of the science as well.  You are intended to write something that will attract enough of your users to click on it, but are also intended to write something that will surely contain all the keywords that you wish to rank for in SERP’s.

Have you ever imagined that in the image below how Google will almost always try to find an exact match to your search first, and then list results in SERP’s which appear to be similarly related as is your query.  This is a very common occurrence in a search results page and is related to algorithm and LSI technique on which Google relies on.

Here are a few tips so as to help you start writing better title tags for your webpage:

1. Google & Adwords Keywords Tool - Bit of thorough research on the keyword, and checking Google trends in important. Easiest thing you can do is go and search for what you are looking for in Google & Google Adwords Keywords Tool.

2. Google Instant - If you have Google Instant turned on, you can immediately see what Google is coming up as suggestions based on your typed keyword.  

3. Google’s External Keyword tool - It is always wise to choose your keywords as they appear in one of the suggestions from Google Instant.  If you want to do thorough keyword research, check the Google External Keyword Tool for more suggestions with search volumes.

4. Keyword Placement - Put the keyword you wish to rank for in the front and not in the end, as recommended.

5. Number of Characters - Recommended is to keep your title under 65 characters. You surely don’t want all of the important keywords at the end of the tag, so best is to put them or their variations at the start.

6. Words not to include - Recommended is that you should always avoid using tags like: “Home”, “Your Company Name”, “Index” or anything that is completely irrelevant and does not indicate what the page is all about.
